Recovery after liposuction for lipedema: what to expect week by week

Recovery after lymph-sparing liposuction happens in stages. Below is an approximate picture. Your surgeon will make an individual plan based on the number of areas treated, the extent of surgery and how you feel.

The first 1–3 days

• Swelling, bruising and soreness are expected. Pain is controlled with painkillers.
• Pinkish fluid may leak from the punctures: this is residual tumescent solution.
• Compression garments are worn around the clock and removed only for hygiene, with the doctor’s permission.
• It is important to get up and walk on the day of surgery or the next day — this helps prevent thrombosis.

1–2 weeks

• Swelling gradually decreases and bruises fade.
• Most patients return to light activity and office work.
• If prescribed, a course of manual lymphatic drainage begins.
• The first follow-up visit with the surgeon.

3–6 weeks

• Compression continues; the schedule is set by the surgeon.
• Activity can be increased gradually: walking, then swimming.
• The skin may feel firmer or less sensitive — this is temporary.

2–6 months

• The swelling finally settles, the tissue softens and the contour becomes smoother.
• This is when the result is assessed and, if planned, preparation for the next stage begins.

What helps recovery

1. Following the compression schedule.
2. Walking a lot and not sitting still for long periods.
3. Drinking enough water.
4. Attending follow-up visits.
5. Keeping a stable weight.

When to contact a doctor urgently

A high temperature, increasing pain or redness in the operated area, pain and swelling in one calf, or shortness of breath are reasons to contact the clinic immediately.
